How our story began
Matthew: I never expected to find forever on a dating app—not after my time on BLK, not after the hookups, the short-term flings, the situationships, and the close calls that left me shaken. But even through all of that, I never lost my belief in love. I wanted something real. I wanted black love. I wanted a wife. At first, I told myself I was open to something casual, but deep down, I knew I was searching for something more. Then I saw you. Your photos stopped me instantly—the strength in your stance, the confidence in your eyes, the softness in your smile. Your fitness, your energy, your curves—your beautiful “yams”—all pulled me in like gravity. You were everything I was attracted to and everything I was hoping for at that stage in my life. I swiped, thinking maybe we would match. When nothing happened at first, I figured it was just another chance that wouldn’t pan out. And then, just like that, there you were—in my matches, in my messages, in my world.
The journey unfolded
Rochelle: From our very first conversation, I felt something shift. You were confident, assertive, spiritually aligned with me in a way I didn’t expect. You were exactly my type, yet so much more than I had imagined. After our second date, I felt a strong urge to stay—not just for the evening, but for the future we were only beginning to discover. That future felt real the moment you handled a situation that once traumatized me. Your response was so gentle, so opposite of what I had experienced before, that I saw a new path for my life—one I could walk with you safely. And when our parents met within the first three months, that’s when I knew: this relationship wasn’t like the others. This one was meant to grow.
Laughter, music, and a question
Since then, our memories have become some of my favorite parts of my story—our late-night songwriting sessions, our creative projects that make us laugh, and that silly airport challenge in New York that still brings a smile to my face whenever I think of it. We love traveling, going to sporting events and concerts, making funny content and doing dance challenges on the beach in Miami, writing music together, and picking out matching outfits to every event we go to. It was during one of these cherished moments that I knew it was time. She was always playing one of her favorite R&B artists, Vedo, when I would come in the house while she was cleaning. So when he had a concert here in Atlanta, that felt like the perfect time. I purchased the meet and greet package and when it was our turn to take a picture with him I bent down on one knee and proposed in front of a major R&B star and the crowd of people taking pictures around him.
